A road trip! A venture to Maine!
We log miles, some in sun, some in rain.
We're pleased to report
We'll sleep in Freeport.
At first light, we'll be driving a-gain.
Freeport
In Freeport, the province of Bean,
It's peaceful, it's tranquil, serene...
Except for the daycare,
For wild children play there,
And masks are infrequently seen.
Acadia: Schoodic Peninsula
At Schoodic Point, boots laced, it's time
To ramble, to scramble, to climb.
The woods are moss-loggy,
Sight lines a big foggy,
The atmosphere mood-filled, sublime.
Perched in the Fog, Schoodic Head.
Foggy Afternoon at Schoodic Point.
Sub-Optimal Dining Options
Bar Harbor's back streets we've been roaming,
No repast to show for our combing.
We settle, it seems,
On two cups of ice cream,
And a drive through the rose-colored gloaming.
Twilight on Cadillac Mountain.
A Classic
On Wednesday, all rested and fed,
We take to a trail, for we've read,
The hiking's a pleasure,
With sights beyond measure...
Seems everyone yearns for Great Head.
Great Head, Brad on the Rocks.
Iconic Bubble Rock on South Bubble.
Thursday Ten-Mile Wander
At daybreak, we park without trouble,
And clamber up South-then-North Bubble.
We scale each protuberance
With heightened exuberance,
Including, of course, Conners Nubble.
Jordan Pond View from North Bubble.
On the Trail, Looking North to Conners Nubble and Eagle Lake.
Looking across Somes Sound from Mt. St. Sauveur.
Friday, Part One
The rubbled trail to St. Sauveur
Is rocky and scarped, we aver.
While cairns and blue blazes
Reveal what the way is,
We somehow trek back where we were.
An Often-Helpful Bates Cairn.
Ubiquitous Blue Blazes Show the Way.
Friday, Part Two
Acadia Peak, it astounds,
With marvelous views of Somes Sound.
The trail has some crowding,
With logjams and louding,
And some who go up don't go down.
Somes Sound from Acadia Mountain Summit.
Hydration Break on Acadia Peak.
Friday Finale
An afternoon on the South Coast
Offers granite and tide pools, a host.
It's lunchtime, we say:
Brad eats haddock filet.
Barb rolls with fresh lobster on toast.
Pink Fleece on Pink Granite, Ship Harbor.
Tidal Pool, Ship Harbor.
Charlotte's Legendary Lobster Pound, Southwest Harbor.
New Jersey Bound: Crossing the Mario M. Cuomo Bridge.
Homeward Bound
Through six states and rain that's systemic,
Through left-lane congestion endemic,
We recollect Maine air
And boot steps we took there...
A good trip, despite the pandemic.
Sunset across Eagle Lake, Acadia National Park.
